A suspected armed robber was shot dead on Tuesday in a gun duel between a robbery syndicate and operatives of the Ogun State Police Command.
The spokesman of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident on Tuesday.
Oyeyemi said the police divisional headquarters at Ikenne, Ikenne LGA, received a distress call at about 05:00am on Monday regarding a robbery.
According to him, a group of armed robbers blocked the road along Olabiro Street in Ikenne and dispossessed people of their valuables.
He explained that the DPO at Ikenne, CSP Noukauba Onuma, mobilised his patrol team and moved to the scene where the hoodlums engaged the police officers in a gun duel.
“On sighting the policemen, the hoodlums engaged them in gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes at the end of which one of the hoodlums was shot dead while others escaped with gunshot injuries.”
He said the body of the suspect, one locally made gun, one live cartridge and one expended cartridge were recovered from the scene.
He said the Commissioner of Police (CP), Edward Awolowo Ajogun, who praised his men for their display of gallantry, directed that the fleeing members of the gang be hunted and brought to justice within the shortest possible time.
