$1.5trn lost globally due to violence against women – UN

 

The United Nations Women has revealed that an estimated $1.5trillion has been lost globally as a result of different violence against women and the inability to allow women a level playing ground to contribute their quota to national development

The deputy country representative of the UN Women, Mr Lansana Wonneh, said this at the joint symposium for special needs groups in Abuja yesterday.

He said, “For estimated 736million women, one in three has been subjected to physical or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence or both, at least once in their life.

Wonneh, who was represented by the national programme officer, UN Women, Mrs Patience Ekeoba, noted that while there’s limitation or documented evidence of violence against older women globally, the evidence showed that they faced various forms of violence, including neglect, abuse, isolation, abandonment, maltreatments, physical, sexual, emotional and physiological violence, leading to poor health outcomes for older women.

The UN deputy country rep further called for “more attention to gender-responsive budgeting, ensuring that budget circulars have definite allocations to gender equality and women empowerment, including the budget for addressing violence against women and girls.”
